Common DNS records
- A records point a domain to an IPv4 server address.
- CNAME records point a name such as www to another hostname.
- MX records route email for the domain.
- TXT records are often used for SPF, DKIM, verification, and security checks.
- Nameservers delegate DNS control to another provider such as Cloudflare or a hosting company.
Using hosting, email, or Cloudflare
Your hosting provider usually gives you the records or nameservers to use. Add those values in your DNS manager, then allow time for propagation.
Avoid common mistakes
Keep a copy of existing DNS records before changing providers, especially MX and TXT records for business email. Incorrect email records can stop mail delivery.
